Falahari Sama Chawal Kheer , Samvat Rice Kheer or Swang Kheer, Kuthiravali Arisi Payasam, falahari kheer is made from sama chawal also known in English as Barnyard Millets, Kuthiravali in Tamil, Udalu in Telugu, Shyama in Bengali, Khira in Oriya, Swank in Punjabi, Kavadapullu in Malayalam, Oodalu in Kannada plus other names for Samwat chawal are bhagar, varai chawal, vari chawal,saanwa, saunfiya, samkiye, swang, samvat.
This year Chaitra Navratri starts from 21st March 2015 to 29th March, ya I know you would think why I am posting fasting recipe now but this kheer recipe am posting now to keep the Millet Friday trend to continue as now a days I am very busy with work and I have not much to to click pictures and the pictures I have I am not able to edit them so I was having this pictures edited with me that made my life easier plus now looking at my work I am not really sure if I will be able to post anything during Chaitra Navatri !

Sama Chawal Kheer | Kuthiravali Payasam Recipe

Ingredients:
- 1/4 Cup - Sama/Barnyard Millet/Kuthiraivali
- 500 ml - Milk
- 2 tbsp or To Taste - Sugar
- 1/2 tbsp - Chopped Almonds
- 1/2 tbsp - Chopped Cashewnuts
- 1 tsp - Chopped Pista
- 1 tsp - Chirongi
- 1/4 tsp - Fresh Cardamom Powder
Method:
- Wash and soak sama/swang chawal in water, keep aside until needed. Meanwhile in a deep bottom vessel boil milk, once milk starts to boil keep the flame in medium and simmer for 5 mins with regular stirring or until milk starts to reduce. Drain water from soaked millets and add it to milk.
- Cook in medium to slow flame until rice gets cooked, stir in regular intervals to avoid milk from getting burnt in pan bottom
- Keep fame in slow and cook kheer until it becomes thick, add chopped dry fruits, sugar, cardamom powder and cook for another 2 mins or until sugar dissolves (off flame once the kheer reach the consistency you like thin, thick or very thick) & off flame.
Serve hot, warm or cold and enjoy the kheer during vrat or fasting or just any other day.
- Add any dry fruits of your choice.
- Once sama chawal or the millet is cooked you can stop cooking the kheer whenever it reaches the consistency you like.
- You can also add 1/2 tsp of rose water.
