Dussehra or Vijayadashami also known as Dashahara, Dashera, Dussera, Dashain is one of the most important Hindu festivals As the name suggests Vijayadashmi or Dussehra is celebrated on the tenth day of the month of Ashwin according to the Hindu lunisolar calendar which corresponds to September or October and this year Dussehra falls on 4th Oct 2014. Dussehra is celebrated on the 10th day of Navratri to mark triumph of good over evil. Lord Rama's victory over the ten-headed demon king Ravana.
The day also marks the victory of Goddess Durga over the demons Mahishasur. On this day in the Treta Yug Shri Ram, the seventh avatar of Vishnu, killed the great demon Ravana.
In most part of North India during 9 days of Navratri Ramayan katha and plays are performed and on 10th day of Dussehra effigies of Ravana are burnt on bonfires in the evening which is spectacular view and always large crowed for this occasion. Vijayadashami is celebrated in various ways in different parts of South India 9th day is celebrated as Ayudha Puja and Sarawathi Puja.
