Panchakajjaya is Kannada specialty more of Udapi side made mostly during Ganesh Chaturthi, Janmashtami or other festive as Naivedyam. It's known as Panchakajjaya where Panch (five) means mixture of 5 element dal (lentil), jaggery, coconut, ghee and cashew nuts. This is the basic recipe and as always there are multiple variety of Panchakajjaya made with green gram (hara moong dal), roasted gram, chana dal and many more with little variations in procedure too.
Most of household prepare Panchakajjaya during Ganesha Chavithi and also in temples it's served as Naivedyam (prasad) to devotees. People also offer Panchakajjaya to Lord Ganesh when their vows are fulfilled as it's believed in Karnataka Panchakajjaya is Ganapathi's favorite food, well every region has they own Ganapati favorite too so which should not grill too much into that.
I had ample of my share of Panchakajjaya during my childhood days thanks to neighbors, recently while talking with one of my colleague we end up talking about Panchakajjaya and I thought of sharing this simple, easy yet wonderful Naivedyam recipes with you all specially for the people doing Ganesh Spathana Naivedyam ideas are very handy :)
I made Panchakajjaya with yellow split moong dal (pasi paruppu) it's very tasty and crunchy since the dal is not cooked but just roasted so for old people or people having tooth problem this might not be the right thing to eat as it has lot of crunch and little hard to bite too but for others they will enjoy this. Try to use fresh grated coconut as much as possible, coconut makes this moist, delicious and juicy or you can use frozen coconut just thaw it before using.
Dry or dessicated coconut can not be used in this recipe, adding cardamom is optional but cardamom takes this dish to all new level. This Panchakajjaya is prepared very quickly we just need to take note while roasting dal that's all so do try this for your Naivedyam some thing different for you and family and enjoy the festive and wishing every one a very Happy Ganesh Chaurthi (Vinayakar Chaturthi) may Ganapati Bappa bless all.

Panchakajjaya Recipe
Panchakajjya is lentil (moong dal), coconut and jaggery based sweet offered as Naivedyam during Ganesh Chaturthi.Author: | Priti | Category: | Sweet/Dessert | Cuisine: | South Indian
Prep Time: | Cook Time: | Total Time:
Serves: | 2-3 People |
Ingredients:
- 1/2 Cup - Yellow Split Moong Dal
- 1/2 Cup - Grated Fresh/Frozen Coconut
- 1/4 Heaped Cup - Powder Jaggery
- 2 tsp - Ghee
- 7-8 - Cashewnuts
- 1/2 tsp - Cardamom Powder (optional)
Method:
- If using frozen coconut thaw it, powder jaggery and mix it with coconut well, there should not be any lumps in jaggery. Do this with hand for best results.
- Clean moong dal and dry roast in a pan or wok in slow flame with continuous stirring until golden brown and fragrant, it will take 4-5 minutes in slow flame.
- Allow roasted dal to cool and grind for 3-4 seconds only. We just want to crush the dal a bit and not powder it.
- In the same pan heat ghee and roast cashew nuts until golden brown, keep aside.
- Now add jaggery and coconut mixture and cook in slow flame for 30 seconds to a minute. [We do this to melt if there is any jaggery lumps left and to caramelize little] Now add crushed moong dal, cardamom powder mix and cook for a minute. This helps in binding dal with jaggery coconut mixture well.
Notes
- You can make the dal powder or coarse powder too.
- Heating jaggery, coconut mixture and adding dal is to combine everything together well and it makes jaggery caramelize.
- If can skip this step and directly mix jaggery, coconut mixture with dal and serve.
- You can also roll the Panchakajjaya in to laddu which will be easy for kids to eat and you can also give it in lunch/snack box.
Easy and delicious Panchakajjaya for Naivedyam or have it as a quick snack too.
